How Often Should You Shampoo Your Hair? Should I Shampoo My Hair Everyday?

How often to shampoo hair

When it comes to taking care of your hair, it’s common to find lots of conflicting information. Or maybe you find advice that sounds like a good idea, only to discover it’s perfect for someone whose hair is of a completely different texture from yours.

Now, there are things you can choose to ignore, such as coloring, perms, or relaxing your tresses, if you have no interest in any of those subjects to begin with. But when it comes to something that applies to every single one of us (such as washing your hair), it makes sense to want to know exactly what would work best.

So, how often should you shampoo your hair?

Should You Wash Your Hair Every Day?

You know how when you go to the salon, there are different hair products for different hair types? This is because there are different factors that come into play when deciding on the best hair care routine. These include all of the following:

1. Hair Texture

Curly hair tends to be significantly drier than straight hair. Therefore, shampooing too often may leave it looking and feeling like straw. If this is the case for you, washing your hair once or twice a week is enough. (Just make sure you get a clarifying shampoo to get rid of all the product buildup.) Meanwhile, straight hair gets oilier faster. If this is your situation, you may need to wash it on a daily basis. If you have tight curls, stick with washing it only once a week, but co-wash it every third day (this means skipping the shampoo completely and only applying conditioner).

2. Hair Color

If you have color-treated hair, don’t wash it more often than every other day. This will ensure your hair color looks fresh for as long as possible. If you’re concerned that your scalp may not feel as clean, you can spray it with dry shampoo on non-wash days. When you do wash it, make sure you’re using a color-safe shampoo and conditioner. This is another way to prevent your color from fading.

3. Skin Type

If you have dry skin, wash your hair every second or third day. Do keep in mind that your scalp may become dryer as you age, so you may have to wash it less than you used to do when you were in high school. If your skin is oily, you can wash your hair every day or every other day. You can control the amount of oil on your scalp by using a clarifying shampoo every other week.

4. Damaged Hair

If the reason your hair is dry is because you’ve colored it or relaxed it too often, wash it every three days. This way you are still removing product buildup and sweat, but you are also allowing the natural oils in your scalp to moisturize it.

5. How Often You Exercise

If you spend most of your time indoors, in air conditioner, and rarely break a sweat, you can go several days without washing your hair. But if you’re the type of person who likes to go to the gym regularly or who loves going out for runs, all that sweating will clog the pores on your scalp, as well as pile up and make your hair smell and look pretty awful. Do keep in mind, however, that hair texture still comes into play when it comes how often you wash it. If you have curly hair and like to work out a lot, alternate regular washes with dry shampoo for each workout.
