It’s that time of the year again – when holidays come one right after the other, and before you know it, the year is already over. But first, let’s celebrate Halloween! Whether you’re trick or treating with your kids or going to a party with friends, dressing up is always fun.
You don’t always need to get a wig to pull your costume together. Styling your hair — especially long hair — is a practical solution that saves you money and makes your Halloween costume even more memorable. All you need is some styling products and instructions to help you get creative.
9 Easy Halloween Hairstyles
1. Mermaid
Start out with dirty hair for this one. You want a messy, beachy texture for the waves to hold. Use a curling wand to create waves. Massage your roots to add volume. Use an anti-frizz cream to keep fuzzies at bay. Spray sea salt texturizer. Wear clip-on colorful hair strands. Sprinkle in hair glitter.
2. Devil
You’ll need a headband that’s the same color as your hair, and a roll of thin wire. Wrap the wire around the headband and create two horns. Divide your hair into four sections — two top portions and two lower ones. Tie the two top portions into small pigtails. Wear the headband, wrap the pigtails around the wire horns, and secure with bobby pins.
3. Diva
If you have big, curly hair, this is a fun option for you. Dry it with a diffuser with your head upside down and go light on the hair products to prevent your hair from getting weighed down. If you have straight hair, use a curling iron or hair crimper to create waves. Set it with hairspray and wear it with a long, sequined gown or a short baby doll dress. Don’t forget the microphone.
4. Fairytale princess or Yodeling Woman
Divide your hair into two sections (one on each side of your head), braid them, and wrap them across the top of your head. Secure with bobby pins. Then either wear them with a tiara and a pink dress, or with lederhosen and a large mug of beer.
5. Witch or Hermione Granger
You’ll need a fine-tooth comb, sectioning hair clips, and hair spray. Section off the top portion of your hair with a clip. Use the fine-tooth comb to tease the lower portion of your hair. Set it with hair spray. Repeat the process with the top portion of your hair.
6. Hippy
Wash your hair the night before, braid it into two braids while it’s still damp, and go to sleep. The next day, take off the braids. If you want additional waves, use a curling iron. Use spray clay to hold the curls in place and to add volume.
Last-Minute Halloween Hairstyles
For those of you who waited until the last minute to do research, rejoice in the fact that there are several simple dos that will make you look as good as the rest of your friends.
7. Princess Leia
Part your hair down the middle and divide it into two sections, one on each side of your head and put them up into two high pigtails. Separate each pigtail into two additional sections and twist them loosely around each other. Wrap the twisted pigtail around each hair tie and secure with bobby pins.
8. Dead Ballerina
This will work best on frizzy hair. Wear it half up, half down, and wrap the top portion into a frizzy bun. Secure it with bobby pins. Tease the lower portion of your hair and set it with hairspray. Wear with a black tank top, black tutu, and black ballet slippers. Follow a YouTube makeup tutorial.
9. Rocker
Remember big hair bands from the ‘80s? If you were born after them, look them up. You may end up with a great music playlist. This is one of the easiest styles to copy. If your hair is curly, brush out the curls, apply some anti-frizz balm, and you’re good to go. If you have wavy or straight hair, tease it and set it with hairspray. If you have straight or wavy hair, divide it into four sections, spray with saltwater — soaking the roots as you go — and use a hairdryer with a diffuser to dry the hair with the saltwater.
